Listen to the Music

A little while back, a musician friend from Cleveland, who plays in Shout, a very popular band up there (www.shoutband.com), told me he thinks Columbus offers more in terms of local music than Cleveland. I'm not that familiar with the music scene in Cleveland, but I know the Capital City is loaded with talent. We have artists here who have had national-chart hits or who have played with well-known musicians or bands.

You can find live music every night of the week. And if you play, there are loads of open sessions where you can drop in, meet some interesting folks and play some cool jams. For instance, the Thirsty Ear Tavern in Grandview has Sunday Blues jams on a regular basis. www.thethirstyear.com

I intend to post reviews of local bands here. I'm interested in hearing about the groups or musicians that float your musical boat. Who is your favorite band or musician? Where are the best venues to hear music? Are you a musician looking to play? Do you sit in on jam sessions and if so, when and where? Is there a real talent out there who, for now, is relatively unknown? All thoughts, suggestions, reviews or tips are welcome.

Upon initial opening of the blog, I was greeted with a bright magenta layout. It was not so much that it was offensive but definitely helped to alert my participation. If the layout had been darker, say a deep blue or black, I would have been less likely to notice and take interest in the text and links. However, at the top of the page with the banner, there is quite a bit of white, descriptive text about the intent of the blog all scrunched up on a highly-contrasted background. This is very helpful information but perhaps it would be better suited on the side, in an About This Blog section.

When the actual body of text is read, the links are quite distinguishable from the rest of the text, which is incredibly helpful. They are first described, either by title or a short sentence of what the site is about, and then the path is given in parenthesis following. While costuming links as words sometimes is better aesthetically, for the purposes of link-sharing in this blog they are best the way they are now.

The body of text is divided nicely into easy-to-read paragraphs, letting the reader choose where they will begin reading. Contrarily, on pages with very large paragraphs or solid blocks of text, I am much less likely to read the entire length of what the author is trying to say as it becomes quite tiresome.

There is only one post so far but it has not been wasted space. It very clearly lets the reader know the intent of the blog with no guesswork or investigative research necessary. This blog is heading down the path of being a discussion-oriented blog, incorporating what the reader has to say and allowing for interaction between the faceless author and the faceless reader. This is a different feeling as opposed to blogs merely focusing on the author's feelings and opinions and events that unfold in their lives. This intrigues me as to how the blog will progress. The author states they will post reviews of music concerts and shows they attend. Will they be written in a way that is them sharing their opinion with the rest, opening the door for input when the reader feels the urge? If this is the case, will the element of interactivity be preserved? Only more blog posts will tell but this is one that I look forward to keeping an eye on.

I've always been a fan of Tim Easton since I moved to Columbus about 10 years ago. I think he is definitely overlooked. Although he's enjoyed some success in the recent years and isn;t back in town as much as he used to be, I think he rocks! I bet your readers will too.
